Anti-wrinkle injections, which most people know as Botox, are one of the treatments we’re asked about most at Skinhampshire. Every treatment here is carried out by Dr Naureen Akhtar (MBBS, MRCGP, DRCOG), a GP and Advanced Aesthetic Doctor, at our clinic in Worting House, just outside Basingstoke town centre.
This page covers what the treatment can and can’t do, what happens at your first appointment, aftercare, safety and prices, so you can decide whether it’s right for you before you book.
Anti-wrinkle injections soften lines caused by muscle movement. At our Basingstoke clinic we most often treat:
It won’t help lines caused by sun damage or by skin sagging with age. If that’s your main concern, Dr Naureen will tell you at your consultation and talk you through options that do work, such as dermal fillers, Profhilo, radiofrequency microneedling or HIFU.
The treatment uses a purified protein, botulinum toxin type A. Tiny amounts are injected into the specific muscles that cause a line. The protein blocks the signal that tells those muscles to contract, so they relax and the skin above them smooths out.
It isn’t instant. Most people notice a change within three to seven days, and the full result shows at around two weeks. Results usually last three to six months, as the nerve endings slowly recover and movement returns. Many of our patients find that with regular treatment the results last longer, and the lines become less deep over time.
Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine, so every treatment starts with a face-to-face consultation with Dr Naureen. She’ll ask about your medical history and any medicines you take, look at how your face moves, and ask what you’d like to change. If the treatment isn’t right for you, she’ll say so.
If you go ahead, the injections take only a few minutes. Most people describe each one as a small pinch. The needles are very fine and no anaesthetic is needed. You may notice a little redness or a small bruise at the injection points, which usually settles within a day or two.

Given by a trained doctor in the right dose, anti-wrinkle injections are a well-established treatment with a good safety record. Side effects are usually mild and short-lived: redness, slight swelling or a small bruise where the needle went in, and sometimes a headache for a day or two. Less often, a brow or eyelid can droop for a few weeks if the product spreads to a nearby muscle. That’s one reason the treatment should only be given by a doctor who knows facial anatomy well.
The treatment isn’t suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with some neuromuscular conditions and medicines. Dr Naureen checks all of this at your consultation.
Treatment for one area starts from £170, and you’ll get a clear price at your consultation before anything is done. Our price list shows the cost for two and three areas and for each of the treatments above. We accept card and PayPal payments.

Most people feel a quick pinch with each injection. The needles are very fine, and the whole treatment takes a few minutes.
Lines start to soften after three to seven days, and the full result shows at about two weeks.
Anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles that cause expression lines, such as frown lines and crow’s feet. Dermal fillers add volume where it has been lost, for example in the cheeks or lips. They’re often used together, and Dr Naureen can advise which suits you.
